I headed back to town and managed to get to the hospital in time to see Veronica. The nurses directed me to her room. I walked in to find a man holding her hand and O’Hare.

“Hi. Should I come back? I don’t want to interrupt.” I started to back up.

“No, no, Stacie, please stay. This is my husband, Andy Gomez.” She turned to him and added, “Stacie is who took care of me yesterday.”

Andy held Veronica’s hand and the picture was Hallmark quality for the loving husband. He was an attractive man and the two seemed to go together. No doubt baby Elle would be a red head. Instead of Veronica’s blue eyes, Andy had brown eyes. Time would tell on Elle’s eyes.

“Glad I could help. How are you and baby Elle?”

“Good. Good. It wasn’t labor after all. I’ve been binging on all kinds of fruit, and well, I paid the price. Won’t do that again for sure.”

Embarrassed, she added, “I think you know the detective…” Her gaze shifted to him.

I nodded.

“Mrs. Noth – Stacie. Mrs. Gomez noticed the black car, too.”

“Good thing you and that man got us back off the road. That car was driving awful close to the curb.” Her husband nodded his thanks and squeezed her hand.

Her comment made me wonder if maybe Mr. Allegro was right after all. So was the driver after her or me? O’Hare peered at me but didn’t say anything. No one did. I finally broke the awkward silence.

“I’m going to see if I can find a coffee machine. Can I get anyone anything?”

Nobody answered and I hesitated. O’Hare cleared his throat. “Mr. Gomez, would you mind if I spoke to your wife for a few minutes? Perhaps you could help Stacie find the coffee?”

Veronica nodded and we both went in search of caffeine. We made small talk and took our time getting back. Andy talked a lot about baby Elle and how excited and scared he was that it was almost time. By the time we returned to Veronica’s room, O’Hare was gone.

“Everything alright, Ronni?” Andy asked as he took his place by her side.

She nodded to him and then turned to me. “He had a lot of questions about Ted and Spencer Krumm.” She looked back to Andy, “Can you arrange to get that box out of my trunk and to Stacie tonight or tomorrow? He thinks maybe there’s something in there that might help the investigation.”

“I can drop it off at your house when I leave here tonight. I just need your address.”

“That would be fine.” I pulled out a piece of paper and jotted down my address.

“When do you get out of here? Will you be going back to work?”

“I think… I’m hoping my doctor will suggest I stay home and not go back. That was the detective’s idea. He seemed to think it would be best – safer.”

I did a double take and it occurred to me that O’Hare was taking Mr. Allegro’s notion that someone was trying to hit us seriously.
